Sarawak Strengthens Position In Global Ai Chip Industry Through Sarawak–Korea Partnership

KUCHING, 20 October 2025 - Sarawak has taken another significant step in its transformation towards a high-technology and digital-driven economy, following a new partnership between SMD Semiconductor and Rebellions Inc. of South Korea.

Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr.) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg described the collaboration as a strategic move that places Sarawak firmly on the global semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) map.

“Today marks another important step in Sarawak’s journey towards becoming a leading player in the global high-technology and digital economy.

“The collaboration between SMD Semiconductor and Rebellions Inc. of South Korea reflects Sarawak’s growing reputation as a trusted and capable partner in the global semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem,” he said.

The Premier said during a press conference held after a courtesy call by Rebellions Inc. at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi on Monday.

The Premier added this partnership also represents another milestone for SMD Semiconductor, following its earlier collaboration with the United Kingdom on advanced sustainable semiconductor manufacturing, workforce training and new development of cutting-edge technology.

“These achievements have laid the foundation for Sarawak to now align with Rebellions’ innovative High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and chiplet-optimised data flow architecture,” he added.

Besides that, Abang Johari said the world is witnessing rapid growth in AI adoption, driving demand for advanced chips capable of processing large and complex data efficiently.

“Rebellions Inc. is a leader in AI accelerator technology, developing customisable AI processors and systems tailored to meet diverse customer needs, from power efficiency to specialised AI workloads.

“It’s strength in HBM technology gives it a major advantage. This technology enables faster and more energy efficient chips by allowing rapid data transfer between the processor and memory.

“Together, they aim to drive innovation that can rival industry giants and place Sarawak firmly on the global semiconductor map.

“This Sarawak, Malaysia – Korea partnership aims to challenge the global dominance in the AI chip market, long led by industry titan, Nvidia,” he explained.

Also present, State Finance Secretary Dato Sri Dr. Wan Lizozman bin Wan Omar, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rebellions Inc Sunghyun Park and CEO SMD Semiconductor Shariman Jamil.
